Course content
During the course students will practise oral presentations of their doctoral projects and of chosen English subject-related texts, writing academic texts in English (with a focus on references to the presented English subject-related texts), discussing and debating, and basic grammar necessary for these tasks. They will be able to write texts independently, absorb more advanced texts written in English, and use the English language in their further studies. The course is divided into six workshops. Between these students are expected to complete home work and other tasks assigned to them by the teacher. The schedule is: Winter semester: 21.9, 12.10, 26.10, 9.11, 23.11, 7.12 Summer semester: 15.2, 1.3, 15.3, 29.3, 12.4, 3.5 The schedule may be changed.

Learning outcomes
Note: this course is only for PhD students! In today's globalized world, foreign languages are becoming more and more important. A modern researcher needs to be able to both absorb and produce material in English. This is a one semester-course for doctoral students who are preparing to take the doctoral exam in English. The course aims at guiding the participants in the context of Academic English (what is it, how should I write/speak, what are the rules etc.). The aim is to teach the participants the basics of Academic English and help them write and present academic material. Please notice that this course takes a wide perspective on Academic English, including both writing and presentation skills. Those who want to focus specifically on writing are recommended KAL/93AWR.
To practise language skills connected with Academic English: grammar, speaking, reading, writing, listening. Students who succesfully pass the course will have practiced their English skills and improved their ability to use English in their work and studies.
