This course is a one-week intensive focused on providing an introduction to the study of comics and graphic novels (and other 'alternative' narrative media). There will be three 90 minute sessions each day (Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri), and students must attend 80% of the course. Each day has a theme, as follows: Monday: History of multimodal narrative, history of comics Tuesday: Formalism and how comics are made Wednesday: Classic forms and comics up through the Bronze age Thursday: Graphic novels and popular genres Friday: "Other" multimodal narrative formswebcomics, zines, games, VR/AR, etc. Each day will include a lecture, an interactive seminar, and a reading / creation section. Students do not need any prior exposure to comics or any prior experience creating comics. Students who are already familiar with the format will still enjoy the course. The final assignment is a zine which will be made throughout the course and finished on the final day.
