Course content
|
Tentative syllabus: 1. Language corpora, corpus tools and their use in translation, linguistics and teaching 2-6. Sketch Engine tools: concordancer, Word Sketches, collocations, Thesaurus. Regular expressions, CQL queries. Creating monolingual and parallel corpora in Sketch Engine. 7-12. KonText and regular expressions. Types of multilingual corpora. Parallel translation corpus InterCorp and its structure. Creating subcorpora. Simple and complex queries. CQL. Collocations. 13. Basic statistical concepts: lexical diversity, absolute/relative frequencies, statistical tests.

Learning outcomes
|
The course is a practical introduction to the use of corpora for language teaching, translation and linguistics. Students are introduced to English corpora available through Sketch Engine, and later to the interface KonText and the parallel multilingual Corpus InterCorp. Using practical examples, they learn simple and more complex queries, while they are also introduced to the basic concepts of corpus methodology and statistical analysis.

Cumulative workload: Participation, 4 in-class quizzes, 4 homework assignments. If not enough cumulative points gained, then a final test Maximum: , 4 in-class quizzes 18p., 4 homework assignments 52, final test 10 Minimum required: 50 pts total, or 44 for quizzes and HW assignments If course repeated, 33 points needed for hw assignments only.
