Course content
1. The concept of Oral Torah 2. Midrashic literature 3. Mishnah and Tosefta 4. Talmud Yerushalmi and Palestinian halakhic tradtition 5. Talmud Bavli 6. First test: Stemberger: Talmud a midraš 7. From the geonim to Maimonides 8. Rashi and the Tosafists 9. Sephardi and Ashkenazi developments in the fourteenth and fifteenth century 10 Second test: Brody, The Geonim of Babylonia 11. The Shulhan Arukh and its commentaries 11. Moravian responsa-literature: fifteenth to seventeenth centuries 12. Moravian responsa-literature: eighteenth to nineteenth centuries 13. Final test: Judaismus od A do Z and topics discussed during the semester

Learning outcomes
The purpose of this class is to outline the history of rabbinic tradition from its beginnings to the early modern times with a special emphasis on Moravian developments.
Ability to understand the basic patterns of halakhic reasoning, positing and solving halakhic problems. Ability to resolve bibliographical references to the classics of rabbinic literature as well as to contextualize these works in the broader context of Jewish intellectual history.
Prerequisites
This seminar is for all the students of the Jewish Studies and for all the other students who would be interested.
