Course content
Hebrew Sources: Medieval and Early Modern Moravia Introduction 1. Rabbis and rabbinic institutions in Moravia (Reading: Miller, Rabbis and Revolution, 11-59) 2. Halakhic responsa literature and its usage in historical researches (Reading: R. Menahem Krochmal on slivovice, ShuT Tzemah Tzedeq, no. 51) Community Affairs 3. Learning outcomes
Besides outlining the most important events, dates, and concepts of Moravan Jewish history the students will encounter each of the major types of Hebrew sources through selected passages. The students should also do their first attempts in academic writing partly on topics related to Moravian Jewish history and partly on their own MA research topic.
Reading and translating Hebrew and Judeo-German texts with the help of English translation. Ability to contextualize persons and events within the broader framework of Jewish life (including legal institutions) during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Prerequisites
This seminar is for all the students of the Jewish Studies and for all the other students who would be interested. Presuppositions: min. one year Hebrew studies

Assessment methods and criteria
Essay

Participation (25%), short essays during semester (25%), a longer essay being the first version of a chapter of the student's future MA thesis (50%)
