Course content
|
The course focuses on in-depth probes into medieval visual culture and art, with an emphasis on the diversity of approaches and examined material. It covers the function of artworks and their contemporary interpretations, while also taking into account the transformations of interpretations throughout history and the historiography of the given field. Special attention is paid to the image in a religious context and to visual communication in general within the framework of the so-called "long Middle Ages." The thematic areas will be based on currently researched scholarly questions. Construction of Interpretation Introduction to the course - on the interpretations of medieval art 1. Learning outcomes
|
The course focuses on in-depth explorations of (primarily) late medieval visual culture and art, with an emphasis on the diversity of approaches and materials studied (e.g., minor arts, painting, book painting, graphic art, as well as architecture and microarchitecture). The course covers the function of works and their current interpretation, but also takes into account changes in interpretation throughout the history and historiography of the given area of creation. Special attention is paid to images in a religious, reformist, and confessional context and to communication through images in general within the so-called Long Middle Ages. The seminar is oriented towards the research-based education method, which builds on the active participation of students in a project from a selected area. The topics will thus be based on currently researched questions.
Orientation in artistic creation in the High Middle Ages and in the theoretical background of the interpretation of medieval works.

Prerequisites

Completing the basic overview of art history at Bc. level. Reading and understanding in English, basic knowledge of German.

Assessment methods and criteria

Student performance, Dialog
Continuous completion of tasks (assignment), regular reading of selected medieval texts, discussion of texts and works.
