The course deepens students' knowledge of the artistic production of the High and Late Middle Ages at various levels of contextual reading of the image. It focuses on the ideological, cultic, and social environments in which the works were produced, and introduces students to the various functions of art in the Middle Ages, especially the interrelationship of religion and image. The main areas of interest in the course are mural and panel painting and illumination, and to a lesser extent sculpture and artistic crafts, which serve to illustrate the relationship of art to cult.
