The lectures provide detailed insights into selected topics in the history of painting between 1000 and 1500 in Central Europe. Students are introduced to topics including illuminated manuscripts, mural painting, and panel paintings from the Romanesque to the Gothic. Not only the form, but also the iconography of the monuments discussed will be analyzed, as well as the social or political context of their creation. The art will be placed in a historical context, and the history of scholarly interest in medieval art will be presented.
Graduates of this course are able to orientate themselves in the basic concepts related to the study of medieval painting in Central Europe, distinguish the main tendencies and recognize iconography, and be able to place works in their historical context. They become familiar with the main works of art of the period. At the same time, students gain an overview of previous research.
