Learning outcomes
The course focuses on the history of art and architecture from the late 19th century to the present day, using the methodological tools of global history. Using selected examples, it addresses the issues of center and periphery, art on the margins of the Euro-Atlantic cultural space, and Central European avant-gardes. Its goal is to introduce new possible approaches to canonical art history and to view the topic more comprehensively, from the perspective of a diverse range of factors that underlie the creation of artworks and the formation of historical narratives (the circulation of people, the distribution of information, the institutional background of education, exhibitions, and the mechanisms of architectural commissions). The traditional categorization of art history into styles, great works, and great artists is subject to criticism and viewed through the prism of intercultural exchange, decentralization, and cultural decolonization. Specific topics of interpretation may vary.
