Learning outcomes
This course combines lectures and seminars to introduce students to the basic outlines of methodology and historiography of art history in Europe and the Anglo-American environment from a perspective that connects the oldest historical epochs and approaches with their updates in the 20th and 21st centuries. The course provides an overview of the trajectory of contemporary theoretical and methodological discourse in art history in relation to the tradition of the field, which is being revitalized and simultaneously revised in new approaches in a symptomatic way. Students will thus become familiar with the key issues and approaches of art history in the range of so-called autonomous and heteronomous methods, with an emphasis on the issues of the 20th and 21st centuries. The course is followed by the subject Methods of Art History 2, which presents selected theoretical concepts and texts from the field of art history from the 20th and 21st centuries from a different perspective ? more analytical than the contextual and comparative form of this course. However, the basic principle is the same ? the starting point is a critical reading of selected texts, through which students become familiar with current trends in art history methodology. The seminars will consist of a discussion of selected readings, specially prepared for each class, which will be followed by a joint discussion critically analyzing the text and offering personal and current perspectives. The course will conclude with a discussion of a specific text chosen by the students, which will then be the subject of an essay.
