1. The concept of monument, care for monuments; tangible and intangible cultural heritage 2. Value of monuments 3. Care for monuments in Europe from Antiquity to the 18th century. 4. Heritage conservation in the 19th century; purism, the Vienna School of art history; the beginnings of area-based heritage conservation 5. Heritage conservation in the 20th century 6. Heritage conservation in Czechoslovakia under socialism 7. Current legislative regulation of the state heritage conservation in the Czech Republic and its organisational structure 8. Current problems of monument care worldwide and in the Czech Republic 9. So-called doctrinal documents of heritage conservation; international organisations and their functions (ICOMOS, ICCROM) 10. World Heritage Convention 11. Methods of heritage conservation: conservation, restoration, reconstruction 12. Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to provide a basic overview of heritage conservation as a professional activity. The course will discuss the mission of the field, its methodology, typology of tangible cultural heritage, the history of the conservation movement from Antiquity to the present with special reference to the history of conservation in the 19th to 21st century in the Czech lands. It will also deal with the administrative and legislative background of the profession in the Czech lands, as well as current problems and challenges in the local and global context.
