Course content

The course is arranged into thirteen lectures to cover the most significant Italian medieval art themes from ninth to fourteenth century A.D. Lecture topics: 1. Dating, Italian terminology used in art history. 2. Late antique art and parallel sub-antique art development, roman origins of medieval arts. 3. Langobard Italy - Langobardia maior, Langobardia minor. 4. Byzantine Italy - Exarchate of Ravenna, local art influenced by Constantinople concept. 5. Pre-carolingian classicism, carolingian art, Italian centers of carolingian culture. 6. In between roman and gothic art. Clash or Evolution? 7. Italian gothic art. 8. Arnolfo di Cambio - milestone in Italian art evolution. 9. Rome of Boniface VIII. Year 1300, the tradition of the holy year and its influence on artistic production. 10. Middle age and Antiquity, antique relics in medieval art, culture of antique cult and its employment in medieval culture and art. 11. Visual art as a language of clerical orders. 12. Rome during the Avignon pontificate. 13. Giotto di Bondone: Giotto painter, Giotto architect.

Learning outcomes
|
Main objective of the course is to provide students with an opportunity to establish a fundamental knowledge system about this area of art history. The course will provide theoretical as well as practical background related to the art evolution in a given geographical area. Individual subjects are designed to render elementary general knowledge enabling orientation in Italian medieval art and perceive it in the context of Europe-wide scope.

Prerequisites

The course is intended for bachelor students who want to gain knowledge about Italian medieval art from early Christian antiquity to the period of Italian gothic.

Student performance
Oral discussion-based exam comprising: - examination of knowledge of key art historic topics and works and ability of their critical analysis - analysis and interpretation of selected works of Italian medieval art
