Course content
1. Chronology of medieval art from the perspective of European historiography. 2. Europe after the collapse of the Roman Empire. Art of the Migration period. 3. Byzantine Art. 4. Carolingian period, new architecture and renaissance in art. 5. Pre-Carolingian and Carolingian book illumination and minor arts. 6. Ottonian art around the year 1000. 7. Romanesque architecture and figurative art I. 8. Romanesque architecture and figurative art II. 9. Benedictine Europe. 10. Gothic art in Ile-deFrance. 11. European cathedral centers 12. Cistercian art. 13. Giotto and the monumental cycles of mural paintings.

Learning outcomes
The course is divided into thirteen areas and covers the most important topics of European fine arts in the period from IV-th to XII-th century.
No special requirements for students except for interest in the subject and cooperation.
Prerequisites
Interest in various aspects that shaped medieval Christian culture and art.

Written exam

Attendance at lessons and successful completion of the course with credit.
