Course content

1. Caravaggio in his youth in Milan, his artistic education. 2. Caravaggio in Rome: early work for Cardinal Francesco del Monte, paintings in the Contarelli Chapel in the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi. 3. Caravaggio in Rome: paintings in the churches of S. Maria del Popolo, S. Maria della Scala and Chiesa Nuova and works up to 1606. 4. Caravaggio in Naples: works from the first stay. 5. Caravaggio in Malta: paintings for the Maltese Knights. 6. Caravaggio in Sicily: the paintings for Messina, Syracuse and Palermo. 7. Caravaggio in Naples: works from the second stay. 8. Italian Caravaggists. 9. French and Spanish Caravaggists. 10. Netherlandish and German Caravaggists. 11. Colloquium.

Learning outcomes
|
Seminars focusing on Michelangelo Merisi, called Caravaggio, on detailed study of his individual works, on the form of his style of painting and on his influence on painters of the 17th century, mostly Italian, but also from the rest of Europe.
Familiarity with Caravaggio's work and its influence on the painting of the 17th century.

Oral exam
Oral presentation of individually selected and in advance studied Caravaggio's work.
