Course content
1. Background of 20th century art, concepts and methodology 2. Arts and Crafts movement, Art Nouveau and the role of ornament 3. The beginnings of abstract expression 4. Fauvism and Expressionism 5. Cubism, Futurism 6. Soviet avant-garde, constructivism and suprematism 7. European interwar avant-garde 8. Uniqueness and reproducibility in art (photography, Taylorism, mass production) 9. Reform in art education: Bauhaus 10. De Stijl Group and Dutch Neo-Plasticism 11. Dada in Europe and the USA, Surrealism 12. Art deco, Neoclassicism and social tendencies of the 1920s and 1930s 13. Art in times of war, ideologies and totalitarianism

Learning outcomes
The course focuses on the key artistic movements and personalities of modern art in 1900-1945, with an emphasis on the radical changes brought about by the artistic avant-gardes. It will present selected topics in the context of cultural and political developments, contemporary art theories and current scholarly discourse. It will trace all artistic modes in the Euro-American space with examples from Czech art. In addition to the main trends, it focuses on the art schools in which all art forms developed in interdependence, the importance of world exhibitions, the theme of art in the time of the world wars and the twists and turns that the wars brought to the further development of art (technical progress, totalitarian regimes, art and ideology, decolonisation and the necessary change of perspective). The course aims to introduce students to the periodisation of art in the specified time period and to the concepts needed to understand the basic problems and issues associated with the many trends in modern art. At the same time, the course aims to develop skills in viewing, receiving and interpreting a work of art.
Orientation in the key artistic styles, movements and personalities of modern art in the period of 1900-1945; developing skills of reception and interpretation of works of art.
Prerequisites
Interest in the specific topics; basic orientation in general European history

Assessment methods and criteria

Producing written work and a paper; an oral exam to check the knowledge of topics discussed. Attending at least 80% of classes.
