1. Education and social status of the painter in the 17th and 18th centuries 2. Basic tasks, themes and image types 3. Iconography, emblem studies 4. Issues in decoration: aristocratic residences 5. Issues in decoration: ecclesiastical residences 6. Relationship between the client and the painter 7. Creators of iconographic programmes 8. Baroque mural painting and its relation to architecture 9. Learning outcomes
The course is designed as a series of selected probes covering a wide range of topics related to the subject of 17th and 18th century painting in Bohemia and Moravia. Specific examples will be used to present the diverse painting roles and characteristic phenomena associated with artistic practice in the period, all with an emphasis on historical, social and cultural contexts. The possibilities of their analysis, interpretation, methodological grasp and current research approach will also be presented.
Orientation in the issues of 17th and 18th century painting in the Czech lands; knowledge of key artists and types of art commissions; developing skills of reception and interpretation of works of art.

Interest in the specific topics; basic orientation in general European history

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam to check the knowledge of topics discussed and of specialised literature. Attending at least 80% of classes.
