The course introduces students to the main chapters of the development of architecture and visual arts in the Czech lands during the reign of the Luxembourg dynasty. Introductory lectures will focus on architecture, sculpture and painting during the reign of John of Luxembourg. Intense attention will be paid to visual culture in the Czech lands during the reign of Charles IV. The architecture and artistic decoration of St. Vitus Cathedral and the Slavonic Monastery in Prague and Karlštejn Castle will be analysed in detail. The final lectures will focus on the artistic culture during the reign of Wenceslas IV when Prague became an important source of the Gothic phase, known as the Beautiful Style.
