Course content
1. Etymology of the term "archive", definition of the terms "document" and "archival material" 2. Archive as a historical source 3. Archive as a memory institution, differences between archives, museums, libraries, galleries 4. Archival legislation in the Czech Republic 5. Organisation of the Czech archives 6. Arrangement of the archive building, characteristics of its main operations 7. File service, pre-archival care, shredding, acquisition 8. Typology of archives in terms of their registration 9. The PEvA national information system (archival records programme) 10. Basic principles of archival organisation, provenance, free provenance principle 11. Archival holdings, their structure, diplomatic aspect, agenda aspect 12. Structure of the fonds of the state district archives, archival collections 13. Archival processing, types of archival aids

Learning outcomes
The seminar will introduce students to the issues of archival activities from the perspective of archival theory and practice. The activities of the archives are described in a broader context of the activities of other memory institutions (museums, libraries, galleries). The lecturing includes a visual presentation of various types and diplomatic categories of archival materials in original preservation, an introduction to archival aids and a tour of the main archival workplaces
Orientation in the issues of archival activities and in the organisation of Czech archives.

Interest in the specific topics; basic orientation in general European history
