Course content |
1. Introduction to the study of ancient iconography, iconographic method and methodology of working with ancient texts. 2. Literary sources of ancient iconography and art of the Renaissance and Mannerism, iconology and emblem studies. 3. Hesiodos and the ages of mankind, personification of the themes of time and cyclicity (especially seasons, months, phases of the day, hours). 4. Depiction of the ages of mankind, personification of life and death, chaos, equinoxes, solstices, moons, countries and continents, elements, winds, rivers, human temperaments, senses, etc. 5. Representation of the basic Olympian gods. 6. Themes from the ancient Greek epic (especially the Argonauts, Jason, the journey to Colchis, the Golden Fleece, Medea); themes from the Theban cycle (especially Oedipus, the Seven against Thebes, Antigone). 7. Themes from the Aeneid and Trojan cycle (esp. Hesperides, Helen, Peleus and Thetis, Paris, the trial of Paridus, Hébé, Achilles, the Trojan Horse, the Trojan War, Hector, Philoctetes, Laokoon, the Sacrifice of Polyxena, etc.). 8. Themes from Homer's epics Ilias and Odyssey 9. Themes from the history of ancient Greece (esp. Alexander the Great, Apelles, Archimedes, Aristotle, Diogenes, Heracleitos and Democritus, Milon, Socrates). 10. Topics in the history of ancient Rome I (esp. Vergilius, Titus Livius: Hannibal, Cato, Caesar, Kimon and Pero, Cleopatra, Cornelia, Decius Mus, Dido and Aeneas, Anchises). 11. Topics in the history of ancient Rome II (esp. Lucretia, Marcus Curtius, Mucius Scevola, Horatius, Romulus and Remus, Sabines, Scipio, Seneca, Sibyls, Sophonisba, Virginia, Zenobia). 12. Themes from the fables of Apuleius' the Golden Ass, Cupid and Psyche. 13. Credit test Gods and Herae according to Ovid's Metamorphoses and personifications from Cesare Ripa's Iconology (several hundred topics, discussed continuously in seminars and self-study with the help of study aids - Moodle and Quizlet).

Learning outcomes |
A series of lectures and seminars will provide students with knowledge of ancient iconography in the visual arts, ancient mythology, allegories, the basics of emblem studies, and the blending of profane and sacred iconography. Visual material from Antiquity to the 21st century will be used in the course, across a variety of art forms. When completing the course, students will be able to recognize the themes of works of art of ancient iconography, personifications and allegories. They will also be familiar with the variations of iconographic themes and their representations in different temporal and geographical contexts and will be able to make basic iconographic interpretations of these works in a contemporary context.
