They change depending on the content of the course Winter Term 2026/27: 1. Learning Japanese from Authentic Language Data This part introduces different types of authentic Japanese language resources, including written, spoken, web-based and learner corpora. Students will see how real examples can help them understand vocabulary, grammar, collocations, register and natural usage beyond textbook or dictionary examples. 2. Corpus Tools: Searching Japanese Usage in Context Students will learn how to use selected corpus tools and Japanese language databases, such as Chunagon/BCCWJ, I-JAS and other corpora including the search functionality Matomete kensaku, Sketch Engine/JpTenTen, and other relevant resources. Through simple practical tasks, they will compare expressions, check particles, observe sentence patterns and collect useful examples for learning, writing and translation. 3. Digital Resources and Authentic Materials: The VIRAI Case This part presents examples from the VIRAI project to show how authentic tourism videos and other real-life materials can be transformed into Japanese learning resources. Students will see how transcription, vocabulary selection and pedagogical adaptation can support learning with authentic materials. 4. Building a Mini-Corpus and Vocabulary List on a Topic of Interest Students will collect a small set of Japanese materials related to a topic that interests them, such as travel, food, anime, music, gaming, fashion, culture or student life. They will organise these materials into a small mini-corpus and use it to identify useful vocabulary, expressions and example sentences. The aim is to show how authentic Japanese content can become a personalised resource for learning vocabulary in context.

The content of this course varies depending on the visiting professor's or instructor's area of specialization. Classes may be held as a regular one-semester course, i.e., two hours per week, or in the form of a series of intensive lectures or seminars held over the course of one to two weeks. Winter Term 2026/27: Advanced Technologies and Corpus-Based Approaches to Japanese Language Learning (prof. I. Srdanović) This workshop introduces corpus-based approaches and digital tools from the perspective of students as learners of Japanese. It focuses on how authentic Japanese language data can support vocabulary learning, understanding natural usage, comparing similar words and grammar patterns, and exploring topics of personal interest through small learner-created corpora and vocabulary lists. Starting from practical examples and everyday learning needs, the workshop also touches upon possible applications in Japanese linguistics, language education and research.
