1. General overview over how the history of modern Korean history is usually classified, according to authoritative and/or popular standard periodization. 2-15. Discussion of a representative selection of major works of Korean literature (in Western language translations or in parallel reading): Introductions by the lecturer, presentations by students, group work.

This course has the following objectives: 1. Provide a general overview over how the history of modern Korean history is usually classified, according to authoritative and/or popular standard periodization. 2. Familiarize with a representative selection of major works of Korean literature (in Western language translations or in parallel reading). 3. Discuss the representation of social and cultural reality in these works. 4. Train the ability to read literature closely (applying "close reading") for the sake of its literariness.
