In this seminar, we will survey English translations of various genres of Japan's literary prose tradition. From the long-form monogatari that relate tales of Genji and the Taira clan to semi-private, semi-public nikki where authors recorded court culture to didactic setsuwa that teach digestible Buddhist lessons; prose in Japan has a long history of fulfilling multiple roles and functions. Through classical prose, we can understand the emotions, social relationships, literature, and private lives of people who have lived on the Japanese archipelago for the last 1500 years. Knowledge of bungo is not required, but original texts will be provided for students interested in experiencing the classical language of Japan. This course is taught in English.
By the end of this course, students will be able to: - Differentiate between the major genres of Japanese prose, summarize their features, and approximate the rough time period any particular text was written. - Explain the cultural background of a text to illuminate why narrators and characters act in different ways and analyze how that cultural focus shifts over time - Identify commonly used narrative tropes in Japanese prose (eg. framing devices, rhetorical strategies, narrative voice) and explain how their use affects the text. - Debate about historical and contemporary interpretations of various texts and defend their own interpretation as it relates to their lived experiences. - Prepare a presentation on a famous author or text. Produce an argumentative essay or creative project that examines an element of Japanese prose and explains how it relates to the themes covered in the course.

Attendance, active participation in class, cca 1300 pages of compulsory reading - prose selections from multiple anthologies, secondary sources and commentary (primary sources - 1000 pages, secondary sources - 300 pages), student choice of assignments (discussions, Moodle posts, quizzes, short papers, presentations, game sessions), student choice of final (paper, project, colloquium) Letter grades are awarded based on the combined points a student earns on their choice of available assignments throughout the semester and their performance on their choice of final. Out of a possible 100 points, students need to earn the following totals to earn each grade: 30 for an E, 35 for a D, 42 for a C, 50 for a B, and 65 for an A. Available assignments and point values will be shared at the start of the course.
