Learning outcomes
|
The aim of this course is to provide students with a deeper insight into Japanese poetic forms (including those less known) and the foremost poets writing in these forms. By reading poems both in the Japanese language and in translations, students follow the development of poetic forms, used language, applied aesthetic ideals, and formal requirements.
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: - analyze and interpret major works of Japanese poetry from the following perspectives: a) literary, i.e., thematic, motivic, poetic, versological, and literary genealogy, (b) literary-historical: in the context of the author's work, within a literary movement, - argue in discussions over the artistic value of the work.
