Learning outcomes |
This course will cover various geostrategic aspects of the dynamically developing Indo-Pacific region. During a workshop in March 2024, invited international experts will discuss the different models of orders for the Indo-Pacific region as well as how China is approached. Especially addressed will be the foreign policy choices of the European Union and the Czech Republic. Their newly conceptualized values-based approach will be exemplified on the relations with ASEAN and India. Moreover, the concept of security collaboration will be discussed, by highlighting the AUKUS pact (Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States). Economic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, notably in the realm of infrastructure, will be examined as well.

This course is organized as a block seminar, with invited international experts discussing various aspects of the Indo-Pacific and the EU's approach to this region. Students will attend a 3-day workshop at UP (18-20 March 2024) organized by the lecturers. Besides attendance (maximum absence 2 sessions) they will be required to write two position papers summarizing the main arguments and discussions of two chosen panels or presentations and stating their position on the discussed topic (2-3 pages each), and one final paper on a topic related to the Indo-Pacific region, based on the course reading and/or the workshop presentations (5-8 pages). |
