The aim of the course will be to introduce students to the history of cinema in the countries of Southeast Asia. Due to the breadth of the material, the course is designed as a two-semester course, and both of the semesters are not formally interrelated, so they can be taken independently. In the first semester we will focus on the South China Sea region through the lens of the Sinophone film industry (especially Hong Kong) and then the major film industries in the Philippines and Indonesia. Smaller productions such as the cinema of Malaysia, Singapore and others will also be part of the course. As an expanding theme, we will also add background information on the cinema of Australia, which is partly intertwined with Sinophone and Indonesian productions.
