The aim of the course is to introduce students to the history of cinema in Southeast Asian countries. In the first classes we will explain the broader context and then we will focus on each national cinema separately. This course focuses particularly on the mainland states of Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar) and, in expanding the material, the context of Indian cinema - especially those cinemas that have had a direct influence on the formation of the traditions of Southeast Asian cinema. We will discuss how cinema started in those countries, important filmmakers, seminal works, as well as current trends. We will also reflect on the possible political influence on the development of cinema (e.g. in Vietnam and Cambodia).
Students will gain a basic overview of Southeast Asian cinema.
