"Korean identity: Definitions and discourses, stereotypes and changes" We will investigate the concepts that come into play when Koreans try to define the specifically"Korean"of "Korean culture" or "things Korean" ("Koreana"), be it among themselves, be it to "foreigners". This comprises the question of "the other" that implicitly or explicitly forms the complement of the alleged "Korean essence". We will also look at how or to which extent the homogeneity paradigm got replaced by "multiculturalism" in South Korea. Academic literature will be provided first to establish a common ground and then also for the specific topics (which are negotiable) on which the participants will "specialize". These specific topics could include, among others: "Koreanness as a motif of talk about Korean food", "Koreanness as a matter of debate in discussions about K-pop", "the cliché of Koreanness as unbearable sadness", "the Koreanness-stereotype that all Koreans strive for uniformity", "Foreign workers in Korea and their troubles with Korea (and Koreanness?) as an issue in Korean movies" etc.
