Course content
- zero equivalents, usage of notes - morphological and syntactic equivalence - translating politeness - literal vs. free translation, shift of meaning - explicitness / implicitness, specification / generalization - translating names, nicknames etc. - colloquial language, slang, dialects - expressivity, vulgarisms, onomatopoeic words - stylistic equivalence, layers of vocabulary - puns - authors´ style In each seminar translations of texts by contemporary Japanese writers will be analysed.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this seminar is to teach the students of Master´s degree the basic steps of translation process when translating fiction. The first part of lesson provides the students with translation theory in the form of students´ presentation. The second part is focused on translation - in each lesson one piece of text (modern Japanese fiction) is translated.
Upon successful completion of this course students know the basic steps of translation process and the problematic areas of translating.
Prerequisites
This course for Master´s degree student requires a good knowledge of Japanese necessary for translating.
