Course content
Topics: the opening of Japan to the world, facing the Western literary tradition, enlightenment period, journalism Ken´yusha, return to Japanese literary tradition, shaping the new literary language political novel, students´ drama and shimpa - new drama romanticism in prose and poetry new poetry shintaishi, classical poetic forms revival social themes, beginnings of social criticism realism in poetry and prose Japanese naturalism and its opponents new styles after 1918 and proletarian literature modernism in Japanese literature conversion literature (tenkó bungaku) literature of pre-war and war period post-war literature Fúzoku shósetsu post-war poetry and drama female writers of the late 20th century and present prose writers of the late 20th century and present

Learning outcomes
This course provides the students with an overview of Japanese literature from Meiji Restauration (1868) until present day. The lectures are focused on the development of traditional literary forms, as well as literary influences and trends coming to Japan from abroad, the impact of war and post-war period on literature, new genres and forms of the late 20th century and the latest trends and writers.
Upon successful completion of the course students will have a good grasp of Japanese literature from 1868 until present day, knowledge of basic works, literary styles and writers of this time.
Prerequisites
The course is designed for students of the Bachelor´s programme of Japanese Philology.
