This course is focused on selected topics from pre-modern history of cultural relations and interaction in East Asia. Attention is paid especially to cultural interaction of China, Japan and Korea, however other cultural areas are also included. The course focuses on selected phenomena and periods most influential in sense of cultural interaction - such as forms and styles of art, technologies, lifestyles. 1) Introduction, the spread of cultural elements in prehistoric times 2) The first contacts between China, Korea and Japan 3) Shamanism in Northeast Asia 4) Sinicization of Japan through Korea 5) Kentoshi - Japanese embassies to Tang China 6) Interaction between China and the "northern barbarians" 7) Zen monks and their contacts with China 8) Wak? pirates (wokou) 9) The Ryukyu Kingdom and its position in East Asia 10) China and Japan in the Tokugawa period - urban culture
