Course content

1. Introduction - Culture and communication. Key cultural values and stereotypes. Social relationship and communication. Traditional gender roles and their reflection in communication. Ethnocentrism, stereotypes and the interference of one's own cultural values as a source of misunderstanding. 2. Verbal and non-verbal communication. Politeness as an important means of verbal and non-verbal communication. 3. Non-verbal communication I. Silence as a means of communication. Hesitation and pauses. Eye-contact. Personal space. 4. Non-verbal communication II. Gestures. Expressing emotions. The function and meaning of laughter in conversation. 5. Verbal communication. Indirectness and vagueness. Ishin denshin. Aizuchi. The relativity of truth. 6. Politeness strategies and communication rules in selected speech acts. Japanese "NO". Apology and expressions of gratitude. Compliments. 7. Humour in conversation - cultural differences. 8. Selected communicative situations - Introduction, exchanging business cards, gift giving. 9. Table habits, topics of conversation, taboo topics. 10. Making phonecalls. 11. Private correspondence. 12. Business correspondence. 13. The Japanese and communication in English. Interpreting.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to gain better understanding and wider knowledge in the area of communication with the Japanese, to learn to interpret typical politeness strategies, verbal as well as non-verbal expressions and get acquantained with Japanese etiquette. The various phenomena will be demonstrated on particuar communication situations in Japanese and English.
Students are able to explain characteristic features of communication with the Japanese, correctly interpret basic politeness strategies and specifics of both verbal and non-verbal communication, and describe basic etiquette rules. In a presentation they demonstrate the ability to analyze a particular phenomenon from a cross-cultural perspective.
