- Religion in the prehistoric and protohistoric times - The beginnings of Shinto - The beginnings of Buddhism in Japan - Buddhism in the 8th to 12th centuries - Taoism, shugendo - Confucianism - Buddhism in the 12th to 14th centuries - Zen Buddhism - Japanese thought in the 14th to 16th centuries - The development of thought in the Tokugawa period - Neo-confucianism - Japanese thought at the turn of 19th and 20th centuries - Kindai tetsugaku

This course provides a comprehensive overview of the development of Japanese thought from the earliest times to the Meiji Restauration. It introduces the original Japanese religion Shinto, ideological streams that penetrated to Japan from the Asian continent (Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism) and their main representants. Attention shall be also paid to political and social aspects of each thought concept.
Upon completion of the course, students will demonstrate a good understanding of the development of Japanese thought from the earliest times to the Meiji Restauration. They will be familiar with religions practised in Japan and ideological streams that penetrated to Japan from the Asian continentand, including their main representants. |
Prerequisites |
The course is designed for Japanese major students but students of other majors are welcome, too. Knowledge of Japanese is not required.
