Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce the student to an overview history of Japanese cinema. The course is a two-semester course. This winter semester will cover material up to approximately the end of World War II, and the following summer semester will be devoted to productions from the American occupation to the present day. The courses build on each other in content, but can be taken separately. The subject matter is discussed through the lens of film history, so the student will always be introduced to the necessary background related to this field (general film history), but also the broader context (political history or contemporary artistic trends) We will begin at the very end of the 19th century, when the first inventions were introduced to Japan. We will then look at the formation of the film industry in the 1910s and 1920s. A turning point for the Japanese film industry was the Tokyo fire of 1923, which destroyed virtually all film production. This was followed by the so-called First Golden Age, which refers to the late 1920s and 1930s. This era saw the work of filmmakers such as Ozu, Mizoguchi and Naruse, and the creation of genre models that are still in use today (gendai geki, jidai geki and shomin geki). The last major chapter will be the war era (1937-1945), which is closely related to propaganda and war cinema.
Students will gain a basic overview of Japanese cinema.
