Learning outcomes
The course is related to the previous ASJ/DJK course. It is designed to provide the student with an overview of the history of Japanese film from 1945 to the present. The subject is discussed through the lens of film studies, so the student will always be introduced to the necessary background related to the field (general film history, production history, basic methods of analysis), but also the broader context (political history or contemporary artistic trends) The interpretation will follow three lines. The first will be a chronological interpretation of the history of Japanese film framed by decades or major events. The second will present the history through the lens of the directorial generations that coexisted, especially during the so-called second golden age (c. 1950-1965). The phenomenon of film festivals at which Japanese films began to appear after 1951 and the emergence of the so-called Japanese New Wave after 1959 will play a role here. The third strand will be the optics of genre cinema, when new genres were formed that formed a substantial part of the studio production of the time (kaiju eiga, kaidan eiga, chanbara, yakuza eiga, pinku eiga). Also included will be the theme of the studio system and the history of the various film studios (Nikkatsu, Shochiku, Toho, Daiei, Shin-Toho, Toei).
Students get a basic knowledge of the history of Japanese film.
