Course content
Part 1: PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY - Phonetic inventary of Japanese - Phonemes, phonological rules in Japanese - Syllable vs. mora - Word stress Part 2: MORPHOLOGY - Parts of speech - Word-formation Part 3: SYNTAX - Sentence and sentence constituents - Passive voice, causative, transitive vs. intransitive verbs - Types of subordinary clauses Part 4: PRAGMATICS AND SOCIOLINGUISTICS - Japanese honorific system - Dialects and sociolects

Learning outcomes
The course provides a deeper and more detailed discussion of Japanese grammar (through comparison with Czech and English).
Upon completion of the course, students will have a broader and more solid theoretical knowledge of Japanese grammar at the level of fonology, morphology, syntax and pragmatics and a better understanding of various relationships in the structure of modern Japanese. They will be able to apply this knowledge while analyzing a particular language phenomenon.
Prerequisites
The course is offered for Japanese double-majors of the B.A. study program.
