Course content
The first main theme of this class is "sea". The sea is very present in the everyday life of many people, from fishermen to sea nomads. It can be a place of danger but also of freedom and adventure. It bears witness to historical changes in the balance of power, and it can symbolize the unconscious and memory as well as the boundary between life and death. The second theme is "memory," its temporality and its quality as a social action. We will read selected texts to understand how elements related to cultural memory appear and are used. We will read a number of Indonesian cultural productions, selected secondary literature and explore short video clips on Youtube which will provide us with a conceptual basis to further appreciate and analyse the narratives. The teaching will consist of weekly meetings consisting of an introduction to the week's topic and the readings. This will be followed by a number of questions and assignments that the students are required to answer, discuss or carry out. The lecturer will provide the materials in a digital form. A good understanding of written Indonesian is prerequisite.
