The Uzbeks are the most numerous Turkic people in Central Asia. The Uzbek language belongs to the Turkic group of languages and is spoken not only in Uzbekistan but also in neighbouring countries: Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan and the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. Uzbek is the second most-widely spoken Turkic language after Turkish, with close to 35 million speakers in the world. It descends directly from the Chagatai Turkic literary language, which was one of the languages of international communication, science, poetry and literature in the Islamic part of Eurasia from the 15th until the early 20th century. Uzbek shares many linguistic features with other Turkic languages. Uzbek is mutually understandable with many of these languages, such as Azerbaijani, Turkish, Turkmen, Kazakh, Tatar, Kyrgyz, but the closest to them are Uyghur speakers. Modern Uzbek is currently written in the modified Latin alphabet. The aim of this course is to provide students with a general knowledge of the Uzbek language, as it is spoken and written today. This course will familiarize students with the sound system and alphabet, basic structure and practical use of the Uzbek language. During the classes students will be exposed to authentic materials such as video clips showing the cultural life of the Uzbek people. By the end of the language course, the student should be able to communicate at the simplest level using familiar phrases and expressions. Also students will be able to read and write short, simple texts. Knowledge of grammar and understanding of the Uzbek language will help students communicate orally not only with Uzbeks, but also with Uyghurs in China. Uzbek classes will be conducted by a native speaker.

Course Requirements The course consists of 13 practice classes. Class participation: 60 %. Regular, active and informed participation is expected. Final written test: 40%. |
