Course content
1 Ethos of the Old Testament: Law, Decalogue, Prophets, Sapiential literature, 2 Ethos of the New Testament: Jesus' moral teaching (conversion, charity, discipleship, cross), Sermon on the Mount, Paul's moral teaching 3 History of moral theology: patristics and scholastics (apostolic fathers, church fathers, Summa theologica by Thomas Aquinas) 4 History of moral theology: development after the council of Trent and the renewal around the Second Vatican Council (renewal after the council of Trent, casuistry, neoscholasticism, attempts at renewal, teaching of the Second Vatican council) 5 Autonomous ethics: autonomous and heteronomous justification for moral principles, the relationship between Revelation and reason 6 Law: definition, eternal and natural law, positive divine and human law 7 Situational ethics: connection to existentialism, roots, J. Fletcher, most loving thing to do, taking situation into account in the catholic moral theology, teleological justification for norms (teleology vs. deontology) 8 Conscience: Scripture and historical development; philosophy, psychology and sociology; doubts, error, education 9 Freedom and decision: Scripture, fundamental option, intention 10 Sin: human act and act of man, decline of the awareness of fault, psychology, Scripture, tradition, distinction (venial - mortal, material - formal), seven deadly sins, sins that cry to heaven, sins against the holy spirit The subject does not have a supportive material.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course Principles of Christian Ethics will be to present biblical bases of moral theology, history of this field and its main themes of interest (conscience, natural law, sin). The interpretation will take into account the Second Vatican Council's requirements for moral theology: biblical grounding, scientific approach, positive focus, and benefit to society.
After completing the course, you will be able to: - apply the Second Vatican Council's requirements to contemporary moral theology - classify ethos in the Old Testament and recognize their typical features - classify the ethics of individual New Testament books and recognize their typical features - classify basic phases in the development of moral theology, compare approaches in different periods - recall the distinction between autonomous and heteronomous ethics, applying this distinction to ethical argumentation - to recall the origin of natural law doctrine and to compare ethics based on natural law with positivist theories - classify individual types of situation morality and explain their differences - explain the phenomenon of conscience (origin of the concept, various aspects, perspective of various scientific disciplines) - compare different concepts of freedom, explain the so-called "optio fundamentalis" - compare attitudes to sin in different cultures and classify sins
Prerequisites
For successful study of this course, you should already be able to: - recall Bible books and their contents - apply methodology of theology - explain the most important moments in the history of philosophy

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Essay

To complete the course it is necessary to submit an essay (length cca 3600 characters including spaces) according to the assignment and to pass an oral exam.
