Course content

The course will first focus on the general doctrine of the sacraments, with the purpose of anchoring the concept of the sacraments within the sacramentality of the world, Christ, the Church, and within the context of Christian anthropology. The seven sacraments will then be discussed individually, beginning with the sacraments of Christian initiation, through the sacraments of healing, to the sacraments of service to the Christian community. In the interpretation of the material, the theological reflection on each topic will be based on the Bible, Christian tradition and the teachings of the Church's magisterium; the ecumenical context of the material will also be taken into account. Individual topics: - General doctrine of the sacraments - The sacraments of initiation: baptism, confirmation, eucharist - Sacrament of Penance - Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick - Sacrament of Holy Orders - Sacrament of Matrimony

The aim of the course is an introduction to Sacramental Theology, which consists in presenting the basic elements of Catholic doctrine on the sacraments.
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: - summarize and explain the basics of Catholic doctrine on the sacraments; - organically integrate the perspectives of Scripture, Tradition, and Church teaching in looking at the various topics of the course; - find the connections of each topic to the Trinitarian and Christological core of the Christian faith; - identify the main lines of Catholic doctrine on the sacraments with regard to their ecumenical dimension; - summarize, critically assess and evaluate selected issues in sacramental theology in the light of the Church's teaching after the Second Vatican Council; - grasp anew the relevance of dogmatic-theological reflection on the sacraments for one's own theological synthesis and spiritual life; - draw conclusions from the doctrine of the sacraments and of the Church for pastoral discernment, practice and catechesis.
