Course content
A brief recapitulation of the perception of marriage and family in biblical cultures. An overview of basic biblical statements about marriage that have guided further theological development. Highlights of the development of the institution of marriage in European culture. Ethical issues related to marriage. Ecclesiastical and legal aspects of marriage with regard to Czech family law.

Learning outcomes
Introduction to the development of family relationships and the concepts of marriage and family. Introduction to basic ethical issues related to marriage and the transmission of life. Introduction to the issues of marriage and the family with an emphasis on current issues, both from the perspective of canon law and Czech family law, following the proceedings of the Synod of Bishops on the family.
Orientation in the history of marriage and family and its current challenges. The ability to identify and articulate what view of a particular ethical issue related to marriage is found in the Bible, tradition, among contemporary Christians, and in the magisterium. The ability to take one's own informed position. Ability to apply church law to model situations.

Assessment methods and criteria

The student organizes his/her studies based on the study materials and instructions in the LMS; he/she participates in the mandatory online webinars, completes continuous tests and actively discusses the learning materials, for which he/she receives points and credit. If excused from a mandatory webinar, the student may view the webinar from a recording. However, the instructor will verify in an appropriate manner that the student has studied the material on the recording. The examination takes the form of a public presentation of a final paper on a selected portion of the exhortation Amoris Laetitia and a discussion of the paper. The score on the LMS midterm assignments is also reflected in the exam score.
