Course content
The teaching is based on relevant literature and the personal experience of the lecturer, who has been professionally involved in the region since 1993, has worked as a journalist in the region for a long time and has written several publications about it. Course content: 1. Ethnic map of the Near and Middle East 2. 2. Religious map of the Near and Middle East 3. Brief political development of the region 4. Jewish-Arab conflict 1 - origins and history 5. Jewish-Arab conflict 2 - current issues 6. Conflicts and their impact on society 7. Tribal structures and their significance in the 21st century 8. The family as the real foundation of society 9. Social values 10. Us and them 11. Fieldwork in the Near and Middle East 12. Middle Eastern media - specifics and differences 13. Ethics of media and fieldwork

Learning outcomes
The course is designed to prepare learners to recognize and understand the practical pitfalls of media coverage and crisis communication in the context of religion and culture in the case of the Middle East, geographic areas and topics where cultural and religious differences may play a significant role. Using case studies of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Iranian issues and other regional specificities, cultural and political differences that affect the work of reporters, field researchers, and aid workers will be explained.
Students will develop an understanding of the cultural and political differences that shape the work of reporters, field researchers, and humanitarian aid workers.

Requirements for students: active participation in the class, final colloquium. Compulsory and recommended reading and partial topical texts related to individual ongoing cases and topics .
