Course content
|
Nowadays media play an important socializing role in human life, it often overshadows the influence of family and school. Therefore, it is important to understand what media literacy is, and how it is possible to achieve it - especially the different target groups of social pedagogy (ie. for children and youth, adults and the elderly in lifelong learning). Students in this course will gain knowledge about the effect of conventional media, as well as the Internet, they will also learn about media risks. Based on acquired knowledge and skills within the media literacy students will be able to suggest appropriate activities suitable for the prevention of media risks when working with different groups of social education. 1. Media literacy education - history of media literacy education, current concepts of media education, place of media literacy education in life-long learning. 2. Media, traditional vs. new media, social media. 3. Media and violence, gender in media, stereotypes in media, propaganda, risky behaviour on the Internet. 4. The role of media in society, media and emotions, advertising, public relations. 5. Media and politics. 6. Media product - content, meaning and its analysis (critical thinking). 7. Media Literacy Lesson Plans.

- Knowledge of the specifics of communication in relation to traditional media and the Internet and their impact on contemporary society - Knowledge and skills in media literacy - Knowledge of the concepts of media education and education topics specified for different groups of social education - Skills for the creation of specific activities and programs to increase media literacy among different groups and to prevent the media risks
- Extended theoretical knowledge of the environment in which mass media operate - Personal development and competence in the field of media literacy - Competence for designing and planning of specific activities and programs aimed to increase media literacy among the target groups of social education, and prevent from media risks

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam, Seminar Work
Students will create a set of activities that will lead to the prevention of media risks when working with a specific group of social education (children, young people, specific groups of adults). The student chooses a particular group - and try to design a course in media literacy for this group with certain activities, he/she will present a selection of activities with the objectives of the course in the seminar on the 11th December 2018. The whole design of the course needs to be handed in via Edis until 2nd February 2019. - Active participation in the seminars is also necessary(student can be absent two times at the most.
