Course content
Institutions caring for sick children (with emphasis on children's hospital) in historical perspective - Relationship, power of control and serving attitude in helping professions, "total institution" - Identifying and understanding the needs of sick children and their families from a historical perspective, EACH Charter - Family-centred care, family as part of the multidisciplinary caring team - Play and its role in institutionalized care for children, play-specialism and the hospital play specialist - Children's hospice - it's origins and specifics in comparison with the adult hospice, spirituality and the concept of "extended friendship" - Helping professional as a companion - limits and possibilities - Social work with families of seriously sick children - myths, prejudice and pitfalls (illustrated on selected case stories) - Advancement of social work with families of sick children - practical and ethical limitations

give general overview of the institutional care for seriously sick children and young adults - its possibilities and historical development - understand the needs of sick children and their families in broader context - present the concept and principles of "family-centred care" - and its practical implications
student is able to identify and understand various phenomena and conditions having formative impact on institutions caring for sick children and their families; - student is able to identify main areas of needs in children and families confronted with serious illness and prospective end of life; - student is able to critically reflect both possibilities and limits of what heping professionals - including himself - can offer the families of sick children.
