Course content
The importance of teaching thanatology to social work students. Trajectories of illness, dying and death. Social worker in palliative care (hospital palliative care, perinatal palliative care, children's palliative care, home hospice care, inpatient hospice). Management of volunteering in palliative / hospice care. Spiritual care. The concept of care for survivors in the Czech Republic. Educational activity in palliative care (education, research, projects, publications).

Learning outcomes
The course aims to acquaint students with the underlying topics of Thanatology known as the science of dying and death. Emphasis is placed on the bio psycho socio-spiritual approach to the patient, whose aim is to maintain the human dignity of the seriously ill patient/client, to achieve the highest possible quality of life and to avoid unnecessary suffering.
Student - knows his / her competences in palliative and hospice care; - manage patient care in the terminal stage of the disease within a multidisciplinary team; - can carry out social work in palliative and hospice care; - can accompany the dying and grieving; - can take care of the survivors; - can solve ethical problems in providing palliative and hospice care.

Written exam

- Recommended attendance at lectures. Credit: - Compulsory reading and review of the publication - the exchange and selection of books will take place at the first lecture (e.g. Expelled Death, Lesson of Life, Light at the End of the Tunnel - Reflections on Life and Dying, What We Most Regret Before Death). - News/projects/research in the field of thanatology, available e.g. at https://paliativecentrum.cz/ or other information platforms. - Completion of the assigned task.
