Learning outcomes
Jan Amos Komenský (1592-1670) is best known as the father of modern pedagogy. However, his pedagogical thinking had a philosophical and theological foundation, which Komenský himself considered to be the most important part of his work and which is now interpreted by contemporary scholars as the most relevant aspect of his thinking. This course will therefore present Comenius as an original philosopher and theologian who, in the context of the late Renaissance and early modernity, developed a unique philosophical-theological system combining the Aristotelian and Platonic philosophical traditions with Christian Trinitarian metaphysics. This combination made it possible for Comenius to unite the modern emphasis on human subjectivity and creativity with a holistic vision of the participatory order of reality. The course will focus on the collective reading of Comenius' philosophical, theological, and mystical texts (in Czech translation) demonstrating the uniqueness of Comenius' pansophic synthesis.
Students will gain a basic overview of current interpretations of Comenius' thinking in theological and philosophical contexts. They will also gain a basic orientation in the field of philosophy of education, Christian metaphysics, and Trinitarian ontology.
