Course content
Italian medieval society through written and material sources. The contents and the teachers of the course change during the years. Academic year 2025/2026: Valentina Rovere What did it mean to live in a medieval city or in the countryside, to share space with merchants, monks, and nobles, to navigate faith, politics, and the natural world? To try to answer these questions, the course opens with a preliminary reflection on the Middle Ages, approached both in its historical reality and through the historiographical perspectives that have shaped its perception. Building on this foundation, we will explore key aspects of medieval civilisation through a combination of literary and documentary texts, works of art, and the study of exceptional life stories. Our journey will cover multiple spheres: the political and religious domains, the domestic sphere, the circulation of knowledge, daily life, and the relationship with the natural world. The aim is to equip students with the tools to appreciate the diversity and complexity of medieval experiences. The course will also include a critical examination of certain myths about the Middle Ages that persist in contemporary culture, often the product of an imprecise or romanticised medievalism, in order to distinguish historical realities from later constructions.
