Course content
|
Main evolutional trends and crises of contemporary civilization - globalization, cosmopolitan culture, civilizations conflict of interests, ecological issues, conflict between the North and the South, spiritual crises, demographic imbalance, perspectives and difficulty of democracy, migration, influence of modern technologies and their analogy during the world history. Main aim of the course is to substantiate how current issues occurred in the history and to define successful and unsuccessful strategies used. The course will be aimed at following period and phenomena: Neolithic revolution and formation of urban civilization, crises of Mediterranean empires and the East in the 12th century BC; Hellenistic world, Roman Empire and demise of antic civilization; middle age Latin civilization - the first attempt to unite Europe; civilizations of Latin America before Columbus and their conflict of interest with Europe; renaissance - anthropocentric reversal and its impacts on Europe; eastern civilizations - their life, religion, ideas (Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Chinese philosophy); industrial revolution and expansion of western culture; 20th century - conflict of opened society with totalitarian utopias.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to explain how today's "global problems" took shape in the course of world history and analyze both successful and unsuccessful strategies for their solution.
Student has ability to compare main evolutional trends and crises of contemporary civilization.
