Course content
The health environment in developing countries differs significantly from the Western context. The course thus aims at raising awareness about important health issues that are key to avoiding unnecessary risks. First of all, it introduces possible health risks connected to travelling and prolonged stay in a (tropical) developing country in terms of infectious diseases, climatic influences and injuries. Furthermore, general epidemiology of infections will be presented with a focus on their sources and process of spreading, including different types of transmission. Finally, prevention strategies will be discussed from a holistic perspective, assessing the importance of vaccination in combination with other measures, both in terms of preparation and behavior in the local context.

Learning outcomes
The course is aimed at students of International Development Studies who will be able to benefit from improved knowledge on health risks during their field work in tropical countries.
Learning outcomes: - provide an insight into the reality of tropical (developing) countries in terms of health concerns - enable student to assess health risks and to react accordingly in terms of prevention as well as immediate reaction and cure

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Student performance

Class examination that tests key concepts learned during the course and knowledge of the assigned readings. Students are also asked to write five 1-page summaries of the assigned readings (25% of the final grade). In addition, students are expected to actively participate in class (10% of the final grade).
