The series of lectures is based on three complementary and mutually supportive levels: (1) to gain basic insight into the study of language, including elementary theoretical foundations (and terminology); (2) to expand existing awareness of specific issues related to language in a broader historical and systemic context; and (3) to foster skills that lead to the conscious use of linguistic knowledge in the practice of teaching. The course focuses primarily on (1) the stratification model of the Czech language and its application to teaching; (2) selected topics in linguistic pragmatics (implicature, presupposition, speech acts); and (3) segmental and suprasegmental phonetic and phonological analysis of selected Czech language material.
